Key takeaways
- Public safety is the biggest group, with 16 companies, followed by transportation (15) and water, utilities and infrastructure (13).
- AI is everywhere: permitting (GovWell, Govstream.ai, Symbium), 911 (Prepared, Aurelian), police reports (Abel, Truleo) and resident service (Polimorphic, Citibot).
- Drones are a category of their own: BRINC, Paladin, SkyfireAI and SkySafe all sell to police and fire.
- A new group of startups sells to the sellers — Starbridge, Pursuit, NationGraph, Cloverleaf AI, GovDash and others help vendors find and win public-sector deals.

How we built it
- Who qualifies: privately held, venture- or growth-backed technology companies that sell mainly to US state and local government, K-12 districts, transit agencies, public utilities or public safety agencies — or that build tools for companies selling to them.
- Who is left out: public companies, companies owned by private equity rollups or acquired by a larger company, and pure defense and space companies.
- Where the names came from: Government Technology's 2026 GovTech 100 (we kept only the independent, venture-backed companies on it), the funding rounds on our govtech funding tracker, and our own research. We checked each company's website for what it sells and whether it has been acquired.
- Recent funding is shown only where a public announcement or news report gives it.

Selling into the same accounts?
Many of these companies sell to the same agencies, often to the same department heads. That makes them partners, competitors and a guide to what agencies are buying.
- Look for integration partners. A records system, a dispatch tool and a drone program all have to share data.
- Watch who is hiring sellers. A fresh round usually means a bigger sales team and a push into new states.
- Use their customer lists. Agencies that adopted one modern tool are often ready for the next.
