What the hub types mean

The FAA groups commercial service airports by their share of national passenger boardings: large hubs handle at least 1% of U.S. enplanements, medium hubs 0.25% to 1%, and small hubs 0.05% to 0.25%. Below them are nonhub primary airports and nonprimary commercial service airports.

Selling to airports

Airports are run by cities, counties, states and independent airport authorities, so they buy like public agencies — through published solicitations, board or council approvals and capital plans. Many projects are paid for in part by the FAA's Airport Improvement Program and passenger facility charges.

  • Know who owns the problem. Airport directors, operations and maintenance leaders, IT and security staff, and aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) units usually shape requirements.
  • Watch the capital plan. Terminal, airfield and technology projects show up in airport capital improvement plans and board agendas years before they're bid.
  • Don't skip the smaller airports. Small hubs and nonhub airports have smaller teams and often get less vendor attention.

For KOVA, KSG reached airport directors, operations staff and ARFF units at large and regional airports, adding 164 opportunities and $5 million in revenue. See our special districts and airports page.

About this data

The figures are the FAA's final calendar year 2025 enplanement counts from its Air Carrier Activity Information System, published September 24, 2026. Enplanements count passengers boarding aircraft, so each round trip counts once at each end. Percent change is calculated from the FAA's 2025 and 2024 figures.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the busiest airport in the US?
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International (ATL), with 51,459,786 passenger enplanements in 2025 according to final FAA data, down 2.0% from 2024.
How many large hub airports are there?
The FAA classifies 30 U.S. airports as large hubs for calendar year 2025, along with 35 medium hubs, 79 small hubs and 258 nonhub primary airports.
What is an enplanement?
One passenger boarding an aircraft at an airport. The FAA uses enplanements to rank airports and to allocate Airport Improvement Program funds.
Who runs U.S. airports?
